Selon la tradition populaire, l’icône de la Sainte Vierge de Lake Ozeriany (Odigitria) aurait été découverte près du village d’Ozeriany, situé à trois kilomètres de Merefa. Cet événement s’est produit pendant les raids tatares en Ukraine au XVIIe siècle. Peu après le miracle, une église fut construite sur le lieu où l’icône était apparue, et une source d’eau pure jaillit à cette même place. En 1711, un monastère pour hommes fut fondé près du village d’Ozeriany, mais il fut fermé en 1787.
\n\nL’icône était transportée chaque year le 30 septembre, la veille de la fête de l’Église du Protection de la Dame, au monastère de Kuriazhsk, où elle restait toute l winter. Elle était ensuite ramenée à l’églage de Lake Ozeriany le 22 avril, avant de retourner définitivement au monastère de Kuriazhsk en 1797.
\n\nUn petit chapelle was built at the place where the clergy from the city and the monks from Kuriazhsk met to carry out the rituals related to the transfer of the icon. This chapel, located on what was formerly the border of the city (now at the corner of the house number 118), was erected in 1847. In 1874, an altar was installed there, but regular services began to be held in this new church only in the late 1880s, by the monks of the Protection of the Lady Church.
\n\nIn May 1989, the church became officially a parish church and came under the responsibility of the diocesan pastoral care committee. In 1890, this committee requested the diocesan architect V. H. Nemkin to design a temporary expansion of the church and to prepare plans for the construction of a new one. On June 24, 1892, the foundation of the new church was laid, and construction was completed nine years later, on September 23, 1901. The church was built using red, unplastered bricks in an eclectic style blending elements of the Byzantine-Rusian tradition.
\n\nLater, the church underwent major renovations according to the plans of the new diocesan architect V. N. Pokrovsky.
