Modern architecture on Klokchovsky Street.

At the very beginning of Klokchovsky Street, at number 3, we find the most outstanding example of Modernist architecture in the city. This former tenement building was constructed in 1903 by the architect B. M. Korenenko for the merchants S. and Sh. Gulko. The building embodies the decorative elements characteristic of the Modernist style, featuring intricate patterns inspired by animal and plant motifs. Relief and flat ornaments are both adorned with such designs. The highlight of the facade is undoubtedly the ornate stucco work, which depicts a multitude of mythological symbols. Among the intricate patterns of leaves and branches, one can discern a bud—or rather, a cocoon—in which a toothed dragon has wrapped itself. This is yet another fascinating example of a building adorned with mythical creatures. Today, the building houses various institutions.
