Public Library

One of the important buildings constructed by Beketov for the purpose of promoting public education,
is the Public Library (1899–1901).
Its opening took place as early as 1886, at the initiative of the Society for Promoting Literacy among the People.
For over twelve years, this institution operated in rented premises, and its collection soon grew so significantly that it became necessary to build a dedicated building for it. Upon requesting a project design, the library’s management turned to A. N. Beketov. It is worth noting that the architect had already gained extensive experience in designing buildings of this type during his work on the project titled „Library for 1.5 million volumes, including a gallery of great figures and a numismatics collection“ (1894). The knowledge he acquired therein enabled him to successfully complete the design for the Kharkiv library.
This small building, located in Petrovskiy Lane (now Korolenko Alley), was constructed using advanced European technologies and standards. Its layout and organization of the book storage areas were particularly praised by contemporaries; the books were transported to the reading rooms using a lifting mechanism. As stated in the journal „Bibliotekar“ in 1911, this Kharkiv library held „hardly any rivals in Russia“ among similar institutions.
