Heraklion, the main seaport at the mouth of the Nile, was a small but prosperous town. Its inhabitants, thanks to their contacts with foreign merchants and sailors who often visited on their way to Egypt, were educated and well-informed. The city’s main temple was dedicated to the god Amun. But in an instant, Heraklion vanished. In the first century BCE, a powerful earthquake destroyed most of the town, killing many residents and forcing the survivors to flee, leaving behind all their belongings. For two thousand years, the ruins lay hidden under layers of silt and ten meters of water, located 3 kilometers off the coast of Alexandria in the Abu Kir Bay.

Last summer, French archaeologist Franck Godio announced that he had found remnants of the city, which he believed belonged to Heraklion: a black granite stone with the word “Heraklion” inscribed on it, remains of ten ships in the former harbor, and thousands of other artifacts, including treasures, coins, vases, and personal items.

Greek historian Diodorus wrote that Hercules, son of Zeus, blocked the Nile’s flow, saving countless lives. In gratitude, people built a temple in his honor and named a city after him. Another Greek historian, Herodotus, stated that Helen of Troy and her lover Paris fled to Heraklion to escape Menelaus’ wrath. However, Tonis, the guardian of the Nile’s gates, forced them to return. The Greek historian Stesichorus also told a different version of these events.
