The first section of the first line of the horse-drawn tramway was opened on September 12, 1882. It ran from the intersection of Ekaterinoslavskaya Street (Poltava Road) and Aleksandrovskaya Street (Krasnoarmeyskaya Street) to Birsza market, located at the border between Nikolaevska Square and Torgova Square (now again Pavlovskaya Square). Four months later, the line was extended through Nikolaevska Square, along Moskovskaya Street and Staro-Moskovskaya Street (Moskovsky Prospect) to the Real School. Another seven months later, it was extended further along Staro-Moskovskaya Street and Konna Street (Bohdana Chmelnytskyi Street) to the Horse Market. From the very beginning, it was clear that, in a city where horse-drawn carriages were still the primary means of transport, this tramway was destined for success. The cost of a direct ride was only 5 kopecks, and with the addition of transfer points, the total cost was even lower – just one-third of the price of a carriage ride. In its first year of operation, it transported over two million passengers; in the second year, that number exceeded three million. In May 1885, the line extended to Sumskaya Street: first, a section from Veterinarna Street (now Ivanova Street) to Torgova Square was opened, and two days later, the entire second line became operational – from Veterinarna Street through the city center to Moskaliovka. The postal service also responded to this development by issuing special cards that allowed people to communicate about meeting times and locations in a way that was reliable and efficient, given the lack of a developed telephone network at that time. These cards provided a simple and effective way to share information. For our purposes, they are particularly interesting because they offer insight into the operation of this tramway system. For example, they reveal where the tram car stops along Sumskaya Street in the city center. It should be noted that fixed stopping points were not established immediately; initially, passengers could get on and off at any point along the route. Let’s visit these locations together. Covered pavilions equipped with clocks and timetables were not introduced immediately or in every station; they appeared only at the terminal stations and some intermediate stops. On October 8, 1896, it was decided to extend the line further to Nikolaevskiy Park (Gorky Park). However, it seems that this plan was never implemented. To date, we have not found any photographs showing tram cars on Sumskaya Street above the Gubernskoye Zemstvo building, nor have we come across any references to this extended line in historical texts.
