The origin of the street mentioned in this article can be traced back to the second half of the 17th century. In those distant times, it was merely a narrow alley. However, the city itself was not particularly large at that time; in terms of size, it resembled more of a present-day small district center. This alley crossed the streets of the Zalopanskaya suburban settlement (part of the Leninsky District near the Blagoveshchenksky Cathedral) and led to the Christmas Church (which no longer exists), located on the street of the same name, now called Krasnooktyabrskaya. It was for this reason that locals named the alley Christmas Alley. During the 17th and first half of the 18th centuries, Christmas Alley ran east of the current location of the street; it only took its present form in 1787. In the late 1830s and early 1840s, when the Christmas Street was renamed Kontorskaya, the alley also acquired the status of a full-fledged street. Starting from the 1880s, substantial stone buildings began to be constructed along it. The street became an important freight route leading to the Blagoveshchenksy Market, so in 1911 it was paved with dressed granite. In the early 20th century, small trade stalls and shops replaced the relatively large industrial buildings that had first appeared here. These buildings, which were distinctive in their architectural style, gave the area a completely new look, shaped by the emerging economic and architectural trends of the early 20th century. The street thus became a kind of commercial extension of the city’s banking district located on Nikolayevskaya Square. During the Great Patriotic War, most of the buildings here were destroyed. We are talking about Engels Street, which was renamed after one of the founders of scientific communism following the 1917 revolution. It is worth mentioning the former factory building at Engels Street 13 – it represents one of the most prominent examples of the “Chicago School” of constructive modernism. Built in 1910 by architect A. Rzepishevsky, this structure features a monolithic reinforced concrete frame and almost entirely glass-covered facades. Today, the building is semi-abandoned.
