Quasars are among the most distant celestial objects that can be observed from Earth. Due to their incredible brightness, they can be seen even at distances of 10 billion light-years away. What is most astonishing about these objects is that, despite their small size, they release an enormous amount of energy across all areas of the electromagnetic spectrum, especially in the infrared range.
The term “quasar” originates from the phrase “QUAsi stellAR”, meaning “pseudo-star”.
When observed through a telescope, these luminous points might appear to be stars. However, they are not stars at all; rather, they are pure radio-emitting sources.
In terms of their properties, these pseudo-star radio sources resemble the active cores of galaxies. Many astrophysicists believe that the energy emitted by these objects is generated through non-nuclear processes.
The energy of quasars originates from the tremendous gravitational compression occurring within the core of a galaxy.
Nevertheless, there are numerous hypotheses and theories regarding the nature of these objects.
The most widely accepted theory today suggests that a quasar is essentially an enormous black hole that sucks in the surrounding space. As particles approach this black hole, they are accelerated and collide with each other, resulting in intense radio emissions. If the black hole also possesses a magnetic field, it will further channel these particles into beams known as “jets”, which shoot out from both poles of the black hole. In other words, the light that astronomers observe is merely what remains of a galaxy that has been completely consumed by this black hole.Other theories propose that quasars are actually young galaxies in the process of forming or developing.
Some scientists even speculate that a quasar could be a young galaxy being devoured by a black hole.Regardless of the exact nature of quasars, astrophysicists closely link their existence with the fate of entire galaxies. Therefore, encountering a quasar certainly doesn’t portend anything good. Fortunately, the closest quasar to us, ZS 273, is located at a distance of 2 billion light-years away.
As mentioned earlier, quasars are among the most distant and ancient celestial objects observable from Earth. Thanks to them, we are able to glimpse the Universe as it existed 2 to 10 billion years ago. The discovery of quasars in 1963 had a profound impact on cosmology and the development of theories concerning the origins of the Universe.
The nature of quasars remains one of the greatest mysteries of the natural world.
