#### Paul Gauguin “Autograph Portrait with Yellow Christ” (1889-1890) #### Paul Gauguin was born on June 7, 1848, in Paris. In his youth, he worked as a sailor and later became a broker on the Paris stock market. In the 1870s, he began to pursue a career in painting and formed a friendship with Pissarro. He participated in Impressionist exhibitions and, from 1883 onward, dedicated himself entirely to art. #### During this period, Gauguin’s works encountered little interest among buyers, and he led a life of poverty and hardship. He broke away from his family and wandered around, living for several years in Brittany, then in Panama and Martinique. In 1888, he worked together with Van Gogh in Arles… #### The rejection by contemporary society awakened Gauguin’s interest in traditional ways of life, the art of ancient Greece, the cultures of the Ancient East, and primitive civilizations. In 1891, he moved to Oceania, settling on the island of Tahiti. After a brief return to France, he stayed there permanently, marrying a young Tahitian woman. #### Even while still in France, Gauguin’s pursuit of universal symbols and the mysterious essence of phenomena brought him into contact with Symbolism. This influenced a group of young artists under his influence, leading them to develop their own artistic style—“Synthetism.” In this approach, the traditional techniques of light and shadow, aerial perspective, and linear perspective were replaced by the rhythmic arrangement of pure colors on individual planes. These colors completely filled the forms of objects, playing a crucial role in creating the emotional and psychological atmosphere of a painting. This style continued to evolve in Gauguin’s works created during his time in Oceania. #### By depicting the lush beauty of tropical nature, as well as the unspoiled, natural human beings living there, Gauguin sought to embody his utopian vision of an earthly paradise where humans could live in harmony with nature. The decorative richness of his paintings, the flatness and monumentality of their composition, and the stylized simplicity of their design all reflected elements of the Art Nouveau style that was emerging at that time. His works greatly influenced the creative endeavors of many artists in the early 20th century. Gauguin also dabbled in sculpture and graphic art. #### Paul Gauguin passed away on May 8, 1903. His entire life was a struggle against mediocrity, established traditions, and prejudice. He always lost, but never gave up due to his unwavering dedication. He had nothing to regret or lose, for what he believed in could only die with him. He spent most of his life in poverty, depression, and illness, yet fame only came after his death, when approximately 200 of his works were displayed in Paris in 1906. The life of Paul Gauguin served as the inspiration for Somerset Maugham’s novel “The Moon and the Money.” A crater on Mercury was named in his honor. Overall, Gauguin’s artistic legacy had a profound impact on painters of the 20th century.
