Боммер — первый в Харькове стационаnaire кинотеатр, открытый в специально постредённом новом здании. Первая демонстрация кинематографа в Харькове состоялась 7 июля 1896 года, но широкое распространение стационарные постоянно работющие кинотеатс началось только в 1906 году. The French brothers Боммер decided to open their cinema in a newly constructed building, rather than in a rented space. They chose the location at Екатеринославской улице (now Полтавский Шлях, 6). Construction was completed in March 1908, and the first floor housed a theater hall with seating for 380 people. On the second floor, there was a large foyer where an orchestra entertained visitors waiting for the next show. It was the cinema “Братья Боммер” that pioneered the systematic recording of local cinematic events in the city. The main office of the Боммер brothers was located in Rostov. Their company had branches in Kharkiv, Kherson, Yalta, and several other cities. In addition to showing films, the company also engaged in film distribution and sold equipment for cinemas. After the start of the Civil War, the Боммер brothers ceased their commercial activities in Russia. However, in the early 1920s, the cinema was reopened by the Soviet authorities under the name “Кинотеатр № 5”. In 1920, a tragic incident occurred there: during a crowd surge on the stairs, the railings collapsed, causing several deaths. Following this accident, all cinemas in the city began to indicate seat numbers on tickets. In 1927, the cinema was renamed “Кинотеатр имени Карла Маркса”. In the 1940s, it was renamed again to “Кинотеатр имени Дзержинского”. In 1951, the theater underwent renovations, and a second auditorium with a capacity of 280 seats was added on the second floor. In 1993, the cinema was renamed in Ukrainian as “Зустріч”, and in 2003 it regained its original name “Боммер”. It now specializes in showing non-commercial films, award-winning works from various festivals, student films, and hosts events related to modern European and Asian cinema.
