Church of St. Paraskeva, Kosmach

Wooden churches of Ukraine are amazing monuments of religious and cultural heritage of our people. This is also the Greek Catholic Church of St. Paraskeva. It is located in the heart of the village of Kosmach.

According to local legends, the construction of the church involved one of the national heroes - Oleksa Dovbush. Preserved information that it was on his donations that the lay people found a Greek Catholic church, which was opened in 1753.

Like many other churches, during the Soviet era, it experienced many hardships. In 1946 the church was transferred to the leadership of the Russian Orthodox Church. At the request of many residents, it was converted into a museum of atheism, trying to preserve and repair the building. The leadership of the local councils did not give it the means or the consent. From the church building was taken away iconostasis, which is familiar to many Ukrainians in the picture "Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors". This helped to save it in hard times. In 1983, unknown people set fire to the church, burning it to the ground. In the early 1990s, the destroyed church building departed under the leadership of the Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church. And already in 1995 the first stone was laid and consecrated, which will become the foundation of the new church. At the moment a new Holy Trinity Church is located nearby, which continued spiritual care and traditions.

A unique church built without a single nail could be lost to laymen, but it is gradually being reborn. To date, a picturesque chapel has been erected on the site of the old church, the famous iconostasis has returned, and thanks to the local Hutsul community, the question of reconstructing the church will not remain unresolved.
