The church of St. Joseph and the monastery of the Lazarite fathers began to be built in 1747 according to the plan of the mayor of Izyaslav, Prince Paul Karl Sangushko. The creator of the project - the royal court architect Paolo Fontana, who served in those days, the prince of the lieutenant of artillery. In 1749 the church, executed in the style of the late Baroque, was ready. At the same time, the construction of cells for the monastery was actively conducted.

History of the Church of Joseph

Next to the church was the palace of Prince Sangushko. The latter was connected to the temple by an elegant bridge in the form of an arch. Unfortunately, today only ruins remained from the palace.

Even after the construction was completed, the ensemble of the church and monastery was supplemented with new objects: Thus, in 1750 the water clock and the altars of the authorship of Fontana were installed, and later the organ appeared. At the end of the 18th century the church was the main temple of the city. The brewery and infirmary operated at the monastery, and since 1800 - a small seminary. In 1842 the monastery ceased to exist, its property was transferred to the state.

The operation of the church was completely banned in 1934. The cult institution was plundered, the organ and furniture were broken and thrown out. The building was used as a military warehouse.

The Church of St. Joseph was once again transferred to the Roman Catholic community only in the early 1990s. At present it is completely restored and is operational.
