Dominican Church, Chortkov

This church is considered to be one of the most beautiful neo-Gothic structures of Ukraine. The majestic cathedral appeared in the 20th century, on the site of an ancient temple. In the legacy he got the labyrinths of ancient dungeons, the entrance to which is now immured.

Here are the tombs of the Polish nobility.

The ancient cathedral was part of the defense complex of the monastery.Surrounded by thick walls and tall towers, it was a powerful fortification structure of its time. But after perestroika, the church lost all its defensive features - the old building was dismantled, building a more refined cathedral in its place.

The monastery complex was opened practically before the First World War. During the revolution, the cathedral suffered the first losses - its bells were requisitioned and allowed to be melted downto make artillery guns.

The monastery stopped its existence before the Second World War - the Bolsheviks took all the valuables. In wartime the church was set on fire, but the townspeople managed to save the neo-Gothic building from fire. After the war, a mineral fertilizer warehouse was placed in the temple walls. Only in the late 1980s the cathedral was returned to the Dominican community. Today the perfectly preserved neo-Gothic church is open to visitors.
