The history of the Chernigov collegium

The building was erected in 1700 due to allocated funds by Ivan Mazepa. The educational institution was founded by Archbishop John on the basis of Slavic and Latin schools. Initially, the Slavic schools were located in the Borisoglebsky Monastery. Later, for the collegium, the main part of the building was allocated.

For 2 years on the western side of the building was built a bell tower in 2 tiers, the lower tier was for the bells, and in the upper - the church of St. John the Divine. On the east side was a building in 2 floors, which housed the refectory and the Church of All Saints.

In the beginning, at the collegium, four classes were opened, in which only 2 teachers worked, later there were three of them. They taught children grammar, syntax in Latin and Polish, and also poetics and rhetoric. The collegium was similar to the Kiev Theological Academy, where children came both from the clergy, and from the Cossacks, nobles and petty bourgeoises. We studied here in Old Slavonic, Latin and Polish.

In 1716 the history of Rome Tita Libya was translated into the Slavic language by teachers of the collegium.

In 1749 in the refectory opened a philosophical class. Children were taught German, French and Greek, as well as geometry, arithmetic and planimetry.

In the period 1784-1786 the collegium was transformed into a theological seminary, in which a museum of church valueswas opened. In the 19th century, in connection with perestroika, the exterior of the building was destroyed, and the building was restored in the middle of the 20th century.

At the moment the Chernigov collegium is part of the Chernigov old-time reserve.
