Yeletsky Assumption Monastery, Chernigov
History of the foundation of the Yeletsky Uspensky Monastery
The date of the foundation of the Yelets monastery is 1060. The founder was Prince Svyatoslav Yaroslavovich. There is a church legend that says that the prince saw in the forest on one of the firs the image of the Mother of God and it was at this place that the monastery was erected. Already in the 12th century, the icon of the Assumption Cathedral was built on the spot where the icon was found. The history of the building is not simple and is covered with a veil of secrets and time. The cathedral often passed to different communities and states. In 1239 the monastery was plundered by the Mongol-Tatars. In 1445 Prince I. Mozhaisky began to rebuild the relics of Chernigov, including the monastery. Later, the monastery moved to Moscow, then to the Poles, it was robbed and destroyed all this time. In 1649 the building was again given to Orthodox believers. Until 1786 Eletsky Monastery had many lands and property in its possession, but Catherine II took all to the treasury. In 1921 the building of the monastery was closed, it was opened only in 1992. In 1941 there was an underground regional committee.
In the 11th century the famous library of Prince Svyatoslav was located in the monastery. In 1646 it was in the walls of the Yeletsky Monastery that the first book in Chernigov was published.
The complex of the Yelets Dormition Monastery includes several buildings: the Uspensky Cathedral, the Church of the Lozogub Tomb, the bell tower, the refectory, the Peter and Paul Church, the abbot's house, the remains of the stone walls of defensive fortifications and the oldest wooden house in the entire Left-bank Ukraine, owned by F.
