Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary (Stryj)
An elegant Gothic church with a sharp spire is the visiting card of the city of Stry, located 70 km from Lviv. The tall tower-chapel becomes pink in the rays of the rising sun, from which the temple becomes even more beautiful. To visit this church, it is worth spending at least half a day and be sure to listen to the organ.
The Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary dates back to the 14th and 15th centuries. In 1396, King Casimir the Great founded the Roman Catholic parish in Stryi. In the beginning of the 15th century a temple was built. Like many religious buildings of that time, he underwent fires, but again revived thanks to the parishioners.
The largest fire was in the late 19th century - then the temple was almost completely destroyed. The church tower also fell. But it was almost immediately started to be rebuilt, and it became better than before. So, there was a new tower-chapel with three bells. The alabaster altar was built in place of a wooden altar that burned down. And the icon of the Blessed Virgin Mary for the temple was painted by Florian Zink from Krakow. Four lateral altars were added to the church. In one of them, the sculpture of Christ Crucified was placed, which survived during a fire.
Sanctuary (sanctuary) of God's Guardian of Human Hopes - this "title" was given to the church in 1995. The crown of the main icon of the temple - the Mother of God of Stryjsky was consecrated during the visit to Lviv by Pope John Paul II.
