Memorial of Lviv Eaglets

The place where the memorial of the Lviv Eaglets is located, was the last shelter for young Polish children who fell during the struggle between Ukrainians and Poles. The war, which was conducted at the beginning of the last century, took many lives from both sides. The ashes of the very young defenders of Lviv were buried here, in the memorial complex, on Lychakiv Cemetery.

The place where the memorial of Lviv Eaglets is located, was the last shelter for young Polish children who fell during the struggle between Ukrainians and Poles. The war, which was conducted at the beginning of the last century, took many lives from both sides. The ashes of the very young defenders of Lviv were buried here, in the memorial complex that is on the Lychakiv cemetery.

The age of the guys who volunteered for the war is amazing. The youngest defender was only 14 years old- his name took its place in the pages of Polish history.

The Polish authorities, who previously owned these lands, built the Eagle Memorial in the 1920s. Rest in the military burial, except for young Polish guys, found and allies: American pilots, volunteers and the French military.

The project of the memorial complex was developed by the former "eaglet", which after the sad events went along the path of architecture.

In Soviet times, the Memorial eagle, of course, was compared to the ground. Only the central tombstone survived: it was taken to Poland. However, after the collapse of the Soviet Union, the Polish investor took up the restoration of the complex. Such an initiative provoked resistance from the side of the Lvov authorities, who found an inappropriate inscription about the "Polish liberators". A scandal broke out around the restoration of the memorial complex. The conflict was resolved only after the intervention of the then President of Ukraine, Viktor Yushchenko, in this process.

Solemn opening of the Eagle Memorial took place in 2005. The presidents of both powers, Poland and Ukraine, took part in it. At the same time, a memorial dedicated to ZUNR soldiers was also opened, which also fell in this war.
