Church of the Holy Spirit (Poteljic)
The village of Potelich is located in the picturesque Zholkovsky district of the Lviv region, located near the Ukrainian-Polish border. The first mention of this village has survived to our days since the 12th century.
Previously, the village was a small town called Telich. The town was widely known because of the deposits of white clay located in its vicinity. Products of local potters were valued and sold far outside the country.
One of the most visited local attractions is the Church of the Holy Spirit, built by potters in 1502 on the site of the old church of Boris and Gleb. The temple is a wooden structure, whose height is more than 18 meters. The church has two domes and consists of a square central frame, with its small and small niches on the north and south sides. The western and southern doors are decorated with forged hinges, made by skilled craftsmen.
>The interior of the church is distinguished by the open space of the central hall, the upper part of which is made in the form of a tent. In the 17th century a new two-tier iconostasis was installed in the church. In 1683, the decoration of the church was replenished with the icon "Deesis", written by the famous artist Ivan Rutkovich. Near the church there is a wooden square bell tower, which, like the main building, consists of two tiers. The size of the bell tower is about four meters in width and the same in length. In 1736, the bell tower was renovated by Kazimir Dominikovich, and the last restoration was carried out in 1970.
>In ancient times, during the church, seven cannons were stored, thus, in the event of danger, all the local population took refuge in the temple. Until now, only two watchtowers, located on the church courtyard, have been preserved from the entire defensive system.
>Considering the decoration of the Church of the Holy Spirit, pay attention to the monumental painting of its walls. These artistic creations date back to 1620-1640. Unique paintings are a complete work that adorns the walls of the temple. In 1970-1972 the architects Bogdan Kindzelsky and Ivan Mogitich restored the whole church ensemble and restored its unique wall paintings.
>You can get to Potelich village by regular buses or fixed-route taxis, which depart from the bus station of the city of Lviv.
