Church of St. Nicholas (Vizhnyany)

Scrubbed is a small village in the Lviv region, where at the moment there are about 300 people. The first mention of this place dates back to 1397, and in 1720 the settlement even received the Magdeburg right, but it was never destined to become a full-fledged city. Despite the advantageous location, the development here began to slow down.

But in Vyzhnyany there is one of the most majestic Roman Catholic shrines.

The Catholic parish in Vyzhnyany was founded in 1400, at the same time the church of St. Nicholas appeared, which today is considered the most valuable landmark of this place. The temple is located in the center of the village. A high tower of the shrine can be seen a few kilometers before approaching the Vyzhnyany.

In the middle of the 17th century, during the battle between the Tatars and Ukrainian Cossacks, the settlement was virtually completely burned, and the church of St. Nicholas suffered. But in the 18th century, a large-scale restoration was carried out. The landmark acquiredits modern look in 1929thanks to the Polish architect Victor. Today, the construction of the church combines the architectural forms of 15-17 and the first half of the 20th century. Of special value are the internal paintings and frescoesmade in the middle of the 20th century by the Lvivite Stanislav Teixeira.

To date, the church of St. Nicholas in Vyzhnyany is abandoned and is in an emergency condition. However, most of the walls, pillars, chapels and murals are still preserved, so there are all chances to save the shrine from total destruction.
