The serpentine trees in the Kyiv region are the largest system of earth fortificationson the territory of Ukraine. This system consists of earthen shafts of different size and height. Some trees reach 12 meters in height and 20 meters in width. Most of them are facing the south and south-east of the country.

There are still disputes about when and by whom these shafts were erected. Only one thing is known: they defended the settled tribes of farmers from the invasion of steppe nomads. One of the most striking and unusual explanations for the emergence of earthen embankments is set forth in the ancient legendof the hero Nikita Kozhemyake and Serpent Gorynych. According to legend, the serpent (the personification of all evil) invited the hero to share all the land equally. Nikita harnessed the snake into a yoke, and thus established the boundaries from Kiev to the Black Sea. The snake drowned in the sea. A huge plowed up serpent furrow and began to be called "Serpentine ramparts".

A lot of interesting and mysterious is connected with these places. For example, the shafts were included in the list of reasons for Hitler, since, in his opinion, the Ukrainian lands historically belonged to Germany. The serpentine trees are the place where history comes to life.
