Assumption Cathedral, Vladimir-Volynsky
The Holy Dormition Cathedral is the only monument of the Volyn regionthat has been preserved since the times of Kievan Rus.
The temple was built in 1160 by Prince Mstislav Izyaslavich, great-grandson of Vladimir Monomakh. In honor of the prince he was called "Mstislav temple" and "Fatherfather Cathedral".
The chronicle says that the prince painted the church and decorated it with amazing icons. At the disposal of the cathedral was given a golden and silver sacred tableware, decorated with beads and precious stones.
In that era, in the temple, apart from conducting worship services, important state affairs were performed. He was the tomb of princes, bishops and boyar nobles. Among the large number of tombs six belong to the Grand Dukes and two belong to the bishops. Immediately resting and its founder - Prince Mstislav Izyaslavovich.
The cathedral had a difficult fate. It was ruined by Tatars and covered by fires. The struggle between the confessions of Orthodox and Uniates led him to a final decline.
During the stay in the power of the Uniates, the Byzantine appearance of the church was greatly changed and began to resemble a Catholic church. But perestroika violated both the appearance of the shrine and the stability of the entire building. As a result, the vault and dome collapsed. The temple turned into ruins.
With the advent of the St. Vladimir Brotherhood in the city , the revival of the temple began. In 1896-1900 the cathedral was restored and the Byzantine image returned to it: simple and concise architectural forms. Unfortunately, from the original decor in the temple, almost nothing has been preserved, except for small fragments of the fresco. Today in the Assumption Cathedral you can see a huge, about two meters high, altar cross of the 17th century.
The cathedral is located in the very center of the city of Vladimir-Volynsky near the ancient city ramparts.
