The Arab House (Kovalevsky House)
Nikolai Kovalevsky is a well-known Kiev official. In the early 20th century, he bought a piece of land in the heart of the city from the owner of the Brodsky sugar factory for the construction of the mansion. The project was led by a talented Kiev architect Pavel Aleshin. The house is stylized as a medieval castle. The architect managed to find the original solution: having designed a semicircular structure with a dome, he concealed the sharp corners and combined the two facades of the house. Water pipes were hidden in the walls of the house, so that the shadow from them did not break the facades. The construction was started in 1911 and lasted 2 years. The architect used all the technical achievements of the time - the house was heated, and the floors were connected by a lift.
On the first floor there are halls, halls, reception rooms, a library and a billiard room. The second floor is the bedroom of the Kovalevsky family members. In the tower there was a hall for rehearsal of the orchestra.
Also, the architect, at the request of the owner, arranged an unusual room in the house, styled under the train compartment. Nikolai Kovalevsky met his wife on the train and jokingly equipped a similar room in a family mansion.
Previously, the house housed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, now the building is subordinate to the Administration of the President of Ukraine.
To get to the house Kovalevsky, you need to go to the metro station Khreshchatyk, go up the street Institutskaya up to the street Shelkovichnaya.
In addition, in the Pechersk district it is worth to visit the House with the Chimeras on Bankova Street, the House of the Weeping Widow in Lutheran Street and much more.
