Trinity Cathedral, Chernigov

In the western part of Chernigov on the Boldin Mountains is the Trinity Cathedral. It is a unique creation of the 18th century. The unusual structure of the temple attracts many tourists, and its miraculous shrines are pilgrims from all over Ukraine, Russia and Belarus.

History of the Trinity Cathedral in Chernigov

The Trinity Cathedral was founded in 1679 according to the plan of Archbishop Lazar Baranovich. In 1688, with the funds transferred by the Ukrainian hetman Ivan Mazepa, the construction resumed. The Trinity Cathedral was designed by the architect John Baptist in the style of early classicism. In 1695 the church was consecrated by Archbishop Feodosy Uglitsky of Chernihiv.

Architecture of the Cathedral

The basis of the Holy Trinity Cathedral is the cross-domed church. Like a Catholic church, the Orthodox church is equipped with two towers on both sides of the western facade. The layout of the Trinity Cathedral is similar to the Old Russian stone buildings. Noticeably the influence of Polish or Lithuanian baroque. The walls of the temple are decorated with niches. Over the cross-shaped, rectangular and arched type windows are triangular and semicircular cornices. The Trinity Cathedral is a seven-domed church with a towering bell tower. The over-saturation with scenery, contrast and dynamism give the whole building a solemn appearance in a truly baroque manner.

Inside the church in the 17th century was painted with various biblical scenes. However, the building was badly damaged by two fires. From the destruction it was possible to save only the central dome. In the 20th century the interior of the church was returned to its original appearance.

The Holy Trinity Cathedral is the main temple of Chernigov. If you pay attention to the pediment of the building, you can see the crown placed over it.

Every day , interesting excursions are organizedin the Trinity Cathedral. The obligatory point of the tourist program is the ascent to the highest tower of the church - the bell tower. It was built in the 18th century by the design of Rastrelli, who planned the Winter Palace in St. Petersburg. Having overcome 172 steps of the Troitskaya bell tower, you can enjoy a bird's-eye view of the beautiful view of Chernigov, a panorama of the golden-domed tops of its churches.

Be sure to visit the basement of the temple. The relics of the Chernigov Saint Theodosius of Uglich, the Monk Lavrenty and the power of many saints rest there. Directly under the floor is a grave crypt, which indicates that the cathedral was also the tomb of feudal lords of the18th and 20th centuries.

Near the cathedral two chapels and a refectory were built. Also near the temple is the Theological School, which prepares future regents psalmschikov.

Now in the Trinity Cathedral there is a miraculous icon of Our Lady of Passion, written in 1903 on Mount Athos. To her pilgrimage from all over Ukraine with the most intimate prayers. They say that it protects and heals from the most serious diseases.

The cathedral is located on Leo Tolstoy Street 92, which can be reached by route taxi No. 30, standing at the crossroads of Musical Street and Leo Tolstoy Street. You can also get to the temple by the minibuses №7, №9 and №36, coming out at the same intersection.

Next to the Trinity Cathedral is the Ilyinsky Church, which can be visited at the same time.
