History of the Trinity Cathedral in Chernigov
The Trinity Cathedral was founded in 1679 according to the plan of Archbishop Lazar Baranovich. In 1688, with the funds transferred by the Ukrainian hetman Ivan Mazepa, the construction resumed. The Trinity Cathedral was designed by the architect John Baptist in the style of early classicism. In 1695 the church was consecrated by Archbishop Feodosy Uglitsky of Chernihiv.
Architecture of the Cathedral
The basis of the Holy Trinity Cathedral is the cross-domed church. Like a Catholic church, the Orthodox church is equipped with two towers on both sides of the western facade. The layout of the Trinity Cathedral is similar to the Old Russian stone buildings. Noticeably the influence of Polish or Lithuanian baroque. The walls of the temple are decorated with niches. Over the cross-shaped, rectangular and arched type windows are triangular and semicircular cornices. The Trinity Cathedral is a seven-domed church with a towering bell tower. The over-saturation with scenery, contrast and dynamism give the whole building a solemn appearance in a truly baroque manner.
Inside the church in the 17th century was painted with various biblical scenes. However, the building was badly damaged by two fires. From the destruction it was possible to save only the central dome. In the 20th century the interior of the church was returned to its original appearance.
The Holy Trinity Cathedral is the main temple of Chernigov. If you pay attention to the pediment of the building, you can see the crown placed over it.
