Ivano-Frankivsk Art Museum
In the charming city of Ivano-Frankivsk there is a place where everyone can feel the beauty of art and get acquainted with the diverse artistic national and cultural traditions. On Sheptytsky Square there is one of the most valuable sights of baroque architecture - the collegiate church of the Blessed Virgin Mary, built according to the project of architect Krassini.
The Ivano-Frankivsk Art Museum functions in the cathedral. Earlier here was the burial vault of Count Potocki. In 1669 the church was converted into a collegiate, in which the educational institution - a branch of the Krakow Academy operated.
Today the Ivano-Frankivsk museum is a valuable treasury of fine and folk art of the Carpathian region. The museum's fund is valuable and diverse. It includes a large number of works of iconography of Galicia, baroque sculptures, paintings of Polish, Italian, German and Austrian artists, old books published in Lviv and Pochaev, as well as valuable works of Ukrainian folk art.
The pearl of the museum is a valuable exposition "Sacral Art of Galicia 15-20 centuries", to which unique monuments of Galician icon painting and carvings belong. Among them, the works of Western Ukrainian masters are unbeaten: Elena Kulchitskaya, Yaroslav Prustr, Ivan Trush, Osip Sorokhtei, Oleksy Novakovsky, Julian Dankevich. This composition is harmoniously complemented by the exhibition of Baroque sculptures by Johann-Georg Pinzel, Thomas Gudder, Dionysus Stanetti.
The creation of the exposition of works of sacred art was carried out by Ukrainian artists, leading historians and art historians. They traveled around Ukraine in search of valuable rare paintings and samples of folk art. During the period 1983-1987, the workers of the Ivano-Frankivsk Museum searched for valuable examples of sacred art in the dumps of church property in the temples of the villages of Bolokhov, Zaluzhye and Zavadka. Many of them entered the art museum from the cellars of the Ivano-Frankivsk cathedral. Sculptures of Saints Peter and Paul, as well as the angels executed in the Baroque style, were found in the church in the town of Galich. In the village of Shevchenko in the church of St. Panteleimon, museum workers found figures of decorative altar carving Colleagues. In 1987-1988, trips were organized to the villages of Gorodenka and Gvozdets, where they were found and transported to the sculpture museum of Johann-Georg Pinzel and the sculptural complex of the altar of the Bernardine monastery.
Workers of the museum tried to preserve valuable works of art, so they sent them for restoration to the Lviv branch of restoration workshops, which is now called the National Research and Restoration Center. Some works were also restored at the Kiev State Art Institute, the modern name of which is the National Academy of Arts of Architecture in Kiev.
It should be noted that at the international exhibition "Impreza" the museum received a collection of modern foreign graphics as a gift.
