Nikolaev Regional Museum of Local Lore
They passed quite successfully, by the beginning of the 19th century the number of valuables had become so great that the question arose about opening a museum for their storage. By order of the chief commander of the Black Sea ports, Marquis de Traverse, a cabinet of raritieswas createdin the city, which in 1803 was converted into a museum. The Museum of Local Lore in Nikolaev is one of the first museums of antiquity in the Russian Empire.
In 1806, it was the only museum in Novorossia, in which all archaeological finds were taken. In 1838 a special pavilion for expositions was built. It was the collection of the Nikolaev Museum of Local Lore that formed the basis for the opening of local museums in such cities as Kerch, Odessa and Kherson.
The collection was badly damaged during the Crimean War of 1856, the October Revolution and the Great Patriotic War. At this time, the exposition constantly moved from the building to the building, as a result of which many artifacts were irretrievably lost.
In 1950, the Nikolaev Museum begins a new life. The collection is replenished with new exhibits. The renovated museum opens its doors to visitors. Since 2012, it is located in the building-monument of national importance "Staroflotsky barracks".
The exposition of the museum contains more than 160 thousand exhibits, all of them are divided into thematic exhibitions. Basically, these are antiquity items from Olbia, instruments of Kievan Rus, Cossack weapons and many other valuable objects.
