The National Museum of the History of Ukraine, which is located in Kiev, was founded long ago, back in 1899. Has an interesting history and formation.

How to create the National Museum of Ukrainian History

First opened as the Museum of Antiquities and Arts. The founders were well-known scientists: D. Shcherbakovsky, V. Khvoyka and N. Belyashevsky. At first it was rather difficult, as there was no money for the museum, it was kept at the expense of donations.

The main guardians of the museum were two families: Tereshchenko and Khanenki. They helped the institution to develop, find new exhibits and simply provide its content. A lot of materials the museum received as a giftfrom different people, connoisseurs of antiquities.

In 1909 the museum receives a state subsidy for the first time. When the First World War began, some employees were drafted into the army and the institution suspended its activities. After the October Revolution, the number of copies increased due to the nationalization of many private collections. When Soviet power came, the museum became state property and was named the First State Museum.

In 1924 it was renamed and now it is known as the All-Ukrainian Historical Museum named after. T. Shevchenko. During this period the life of the institution is actively developing and the museum is replenished with new and unique materials.

In the early 30-ies the museum moved to one of the buildings of the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra. During the Second World War, the most valuable specimens were taken to the city of Ufa, and the remaining ones were transferred to the Pedagogical Museum. Many materials were taken out by the Germans in 1941 and 1943. The return of museum values was held in 1947, however, not all exhibits returned home.

The museum re-opened its doors already in 1943, and a year later it received a room that is still in use. For all the remaining years the name of the museum has changed many times, and only since 1991 it became the National Museum of Ukrainian History.
