Kirillov Church
The Church of St. Cyril is a unique architectural monument of the 12th century, which has been preserved to the present day almost in its original form. The church is located in the historical district of the capital - Dorogozhichy and is part of the museum-reserve "Sophia of Kiev".
The whole world is famous for the church with unique frescoes, which were discovered under a thick layer of plaster during the restoration work in 1860. The frescoes were restored by teachers and students of the Kiev Drawing School named after Nikolai Murashko. Icons for the iconostasis of the temple were painted by the great artist Mikhail Vrubel, his most famous and impressive works are: "Annunciation", "Sacrament and the Theotokos". Here you can also admire one of the most famous of his creations - "The Descent of the Holy Spirit." The artist skillfully conveyed the complexity of human feelings and experiences. On the choir of the church there is another great work by Mikhail Vrubel - "Angels with lobars".
In May 1929 the ancient Cyril Church was declared the State Historical and Cultural Museum-Reserve. The amazing architecture of the temple is perfectly preserved to this day. During the 17th and 18th centuries the church was rebuilt several times, but this only manifested itself in the rearrangement of a small part of the vaults, the erection of a luxurious gable above the entrance, the completion of four side domes, the decoration of portals and windows with stucco decorations. The oldest architectural forms of the Church of St. Cyril are still clearly visible under these additions. The modern architectural and artistic view of the church with the characteristic features of the national baroque was formed with the participation of the talented Ukrainian architect Ivan Grigorovich-Barsky.
The uniqueness of this temple structure is its authenticity. This is the second cathedral, after Sofia, which has survived to our days since the days of Ancient Rus.
