Budget Venice: Dutch version - Githhorn
Where did this unusual name "Hithorn" (Githhorn) come from, and why is the village called that way? After the flood of All Saints according to one source, or St. Elizabeth by other sources, which occurred in 1170, to the marshy and peaty shores of northern Holland, the wandering in search of a shelter, safe place for life and conducting religious rituals of the monks of the flagellant sect or "beating"/p>

The settlement they founded in 1291 was called Geytenhoren. In fact, nothing in common with goats or goat's horns, it got its name from the shoreline, the spit, where the first settler ships landed.

The name of the Dutch village of Giethoorn in Russian sounds like Hithorn (Githhorn). The goat horn is pronounced in Dutch as Hayten Horn, and the name of the village of Heathorn originated from the word hoorn, which used to refer to a piece of land - an island that literally jumped out of the water.

This is how the village life of the beginning of 1900 looked like. Houses, canals, boats almost did not change, only one generation was replaced by another, now grandsons cut through the dark waters of canals on modern slow-moving motor boats.
On such boats, they not only fished, sailed through the village channels for shopping, but with virtuoso Easily transported milk, cattle and horses.

In the winter, when the channels were stiffened by strong ice, on skates and sledges delivered cans with a pier com and necessary products from local stores.
Heathorn was and is a favorite vacation spot for the Dutch. In 1900, in the journal De Aarde en haar volken an article was published dedicated to an unusual village. Has reinforced interest in Hitmore and the visit of the Queen of the Netherlands. After all, wherever you get the royal family will not go. The north-eastern part of the Netherlands has quite a close connection with the royal houses, including the house of the Orange. Since the 7th century, the fortresses and hunting grounds of the king of Friesland (King Radbod), the state staff (George Scheck van Tutenburg) and the blood relatives of the bishop of the Utrecht episcopate had their fortresses and hunting grounds.

Heathorn became a popular tourist destination in the late 19th - early 20th century. You can find out about this from advertising cards of that time. 1910, advertising cafe Cafe 't Wapen van Giethoorn Garage L. Prinsen

The reverse side of the advertising card 1910 year. Reading advertising, we can make sure that the rental of boats for walks through the canals in Heathorn are the last 117 years!

The central canal, proudly named Binnenpad (Inner Path), there is also the Cornelius Canal, the canal of the road to the Mill, Church Street, High Field Street.

A farmhouse with an ancillary farm, a sheep cattle, outbuildings in the backyard. >
Compare, time is not overpowering Hit Orn. House at Binnenpad 16 in the first half of the 20th century ...

... and now. Only the reed roof remains unchanged. It seems to me, or in our time the house looks more attractive. Do you agree?

The reserve for many kilometers stretches between Heathorn and Steinwijke. Almost Claude Monet and his famous paintings "Water Lilies" of the period of work in Giverny. This beauty can be written endlessly.

The Sky the flood of leaden clouds, spilled on us by the slanting wall of a short spring rain, was clouded by unknown faces. But in 10 minutes someone upstairs closed the tap with cold water, deciding that with us enough tests and today, again the spring sun came out, blew a warm, gentle breeze to dry the wet clothes, and people on boats around began to swim out from under the coastal bushes, hanging bridges and put their colorful umbrellas on the bottom of the boats.
After making a big circle, we returned to the village, but on the way to the external village channel we were in for a surprise. Do you think that traffic jams are only on the roads? You are mistaken, see how the rush hour looks on the streets of Heathorn. Would you like to experience a ramming boat or friendly reception with an iron edging of the boat's nose on the head?
An unforgettable experience, be sure to follow them to the Dutch Venice. At least you will not only be able to get memorable injuries, but also try to ram yourself some boat at your discretion.
