    The main reason for our experiment was the news that the August harvest of watermelons should not wait - all the watermelon-melon fields burned the ruthless sun. "Or buy watermelons now, or forget about their existence until next year", - we decided and went to the authorities with a demand to support our undertakings financially. Moreover, Mr. Tagayev himself, the head of the consumer market department, said that, starting from the middle of July, melons can be eaten boldly. According to him, 90% of sales outlets selling now melons and watermelons have all the necessary documents confirming the quality of the goods. Having believed the weight of Tagayev and his team, we decided not to delve into the topic of quality, focusing on the flavor aspects of the July watermelons. And at the same time check the viability of recommendations from the category "How to choose the most delicious, juicy and sweet fruit".



    So, having received 200 rubles and instructions from the hungry part of the editorial office, we went in search of our ideal watermelon. We were lucky: our colleague Alexander turned out to be a real expert in watermelon-melon affairs and hurried to share his knowledge with less knowledgeable participants in the experiment.
    As a result, it became known that the sweetest and juicy berries (yes, if you do not already know, we inform: watermelon is a berry) are sold in the center of the 20th quarter. It was there that we went, having previously suspected Sasha in kinship with the owners of the fruit and vegetable tent. The salesman, a smiling fellow with slanted eyes and a strong southern tan, agreed with passion to participate in the search for a watermelon that would meet all the requirements of experts. In addition, our idea interested in a casual buyer - an elderly man who did not miss the opportunity to give us a couple of recommendations. Summarizing the received information, we proceeded to natural selection, alternately fulfilling each set condition.

    Condition 1. Place of birth of Arbuza - Kamyshin, Volgograd, Astrakhan.

    It is in this sequence. The most delicious watermelons - a native of the Volgograd region, their cousins ​​from Astrakhan are considered slightly less sweet. We were lucky - in the tent chosen for the experiment we traded exclusively in Volgograd. "Watermelon is very sweet," - read the self-confident inscription on the price tag.

    Condition 2. Size matters

    Condition 3. The lighter, the sweeter

    Condition 4. Calling berry

    If you knock on a ripe watermelon, you will hear not a deaf, but a clear and sonorous sound. We honestly "caught out" & quot; a dozen watermelons, performing with their help a kind of summer symphony.

    Condition 5. Dry tail

    Here everything is logical: if the tail of the watermelon is green, then it was removed from the bed unripened. And vice versa. With this point we had problems - most berries were clearly collected during their early youth, as evidenced by their fresh and strong tails. Thus, we immediately doubted the honesty of those who threw the news in the media that this year the watermelons came to the peak of their maturity in early July. Most likely, the panicked owners of the melons decided in this way to protect themselves from the possible loss of the August harvest.

    Condition 6: Bright and brilliant

    A ripe watermelon is necessarily covered with a hard, shiny crust that is difficult to pierce with a fingernail, and all because "tearing" with melon, watermelon is no longer able to absorb moisture, and its crust hardens. Strips on the crust should be as contrasted.

    Condition 7. Birthmark

    The side of the watermelon should be decorated with a light yellow-orange spot. The seller positively left his head and sent our perfect watermelon to the scales. Yagoda pulled for 107 rubles, though it was allowed to give us just a hundred, writing off a small change in gratitude for the present fun.

    The result:did not exceed expectations. Delivering a valuable cargo to the office, we gave it to the mercy of the most economical man of the editorial board (man, by the way), who taught us to cut a striped berry correctly and beautifully. But, alas, ah, watermelon was not a masterpiece of melon farming. Pink, watery, not very sweet. There were two options for the defeat: either the recommendations described above are not worth anything, and when choosing watermelon, one should rely only on one's own intuition and life experience, or the watermelon season, despite all the promises of agronomists and exhortations of climatologists, is not yet open.
