Lake Bonneville: an incredible place for extraordinary high-speed records
There are very few people who can compete with the number of outstanding events that have taken place on Lake Bonneville. Dozens of world high-speed records were set up here, several films were shot on the lake, and even a capsule of the spacecraft landed on its surface. Why Bonneville Lake has become the center of all these events, we will tell below.
Lake Bonneville is located in the US, in the state of Utah and has an area of just over 100 km sq. This is not an ordinary lake. The fact is that the reservoir itself, located in the middle of the desert, dried up during the Pleistocene, about 16,000 years ago. In its place once there was a large lake, but over time the climate in this part of North America became more arid, precipitation fell less and drought became more frequent. Gradually the water evaporated, and Bonneville Lake turned into a salt plateau with a perfectly flat surface. The thickness of the salt deposits of the lake in some places reaches 1.8 meters.

Thanks to its smooth and dense surface, as well as impressive dimensions, the lake attracted the attention of fans of high-speed records. The first races took place here in 1914, when racer Teddy Tezlaff set here the first speed record of 228 km/h. After that, drivers from all over the world began to come here with speedy achievements. All kinds of competitions and race for survival on cars and motorcycles were held regularly here. Over time, Bonneville Lake has turned into a unique racing track, where the most high-speed records in the world were installed.

The most favorable period for races is a warm season from May to October. The lake, although it is in the desert, but a small amount of precipitation falls here, about 100-300 millimeters per year. For this reason, from autumn to spring the lake is covered with a small layer of water and high-speed arrivals are not carried out here. Of the latest achievements recorded on the salt lake of Bonneville, one can call the highest speed on the motorcycle, which was achieved in 2010 and amounted to 605.697 km/h, as well as a record speed on a car that was 737,395 km/h and was delivered in 2001 "Bonneville Lake: An Unbelievable Place for Beyond High Speed Records"

And finally, a few photos that convey the unique atmosphere of this salt lake of high-speed records.
