Bamboo Oasis – Green Village on the island of Bali

It snowed here today. It was almost time anyway (it’s already mid-December), and we were looking forward to it, but once it did, I suddenly wanted to be in summer again )) Maybe you’ll feel the same after seeing these photos. They show a bamboo village on the shore of the sacred Ayung River on the island of Bali. It’s called Green Village and serves both as a place of residence and as a model project.

The ideas behind Green Village are gaining popularity. Furniture is made from bamboo, and buildings are constructed using this material too—resulting in structures that are both reliable and affordable.

I’ve referred to this area as a “village,” of course, in a figurative sense. There aren’t many houses there yet, but the goal is not to provide housing for those who need it, but rather to show the whole world the advantages and possibilities of bamboo as a building material. Green Village was designed according to a plan that won the Aga Khan Award for Architecture in 2010. The head of the company Ibuku, which designed and built this bamboo masterpiece, says that their goal is to change people’s perceptions and convince them of the endless potential of bamboo. Even the wood of the strongest tree species cannot compare with bamboo when it comes to being a reliable and sustainable building material. In just three years, it is possible to grow a bamboo forest, build a house using it with minimal investment, and live there happily for the rest of one’s life.

Green Village is located right in the middle of a forest—the houses seem to blend seamlessly into the surrounding nature, creating a truly harmonious whole. There are no synthetic or chemical materials used; everything inside the houses, including the interior decor and furniture, is made from bamboo. Thanks to intricate craftsmanship, the combination of bamboo stalks of different lengths and thicknesses, and various processing techniques, the design is neither boring nor monotonous.

The company builds these houses on order. People interested in purchasing them can be found in Canada, South America, New Zealand, and many other places. Even Tony Blair, the former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, was among the customers. A portion of the profits from these sales is donated to a special fund established by Green School, which helps students in Bali cover their tuition fees.
