Vertical Garden – The Record Holder

This type of greenery is gaining increasing popularity. In fact, it’s not even necessary to cover the exterior walls of a building – you can simply create a small vertical garden on the wall of an office building.

You could also limit it to a small garden bed – that’s still great! But this is not the main topic of our discussion...

However, large-scale creations by professional garden designers are truly impressive. The largest vertical garden in the world can be found on the walls of the Centro Commerciale Fiordaliso shopping center in the small Italian town of Roccano. This record-breaking garden covers an area of 13,600 square feet (about 1,263 square meters) and is home to more than 44,000 plants.

This garden was created back in 2010, but it wasn’t officially recognized as the largest vertical garden until recently. Before that, the largest one was considered the garden on the walls of the Santo Domingo hotel in Madrid. According to its creators, it took a year to grow the seedlings and bedding plants in greenhouses, and another 90 days to prepare the necessary planting areas. The plants are placed in special metal containers and fixed to the walls, much like pieces of a unique construction set. As for how the irrigation system is designed… I can’t even give you a rough idea. I don’t think this information is kept secret; it’s just that few people are really interested in such technical details.

The cost of creating such a beautiful space was approximately 1 million euros. That’s certainly a significant amount, but think optimistically about how much polluted air this greenery helps to clean… And how many people will be eager to see and photograph this unique shopping center!
