The Tibetan Monastery-Castle of Kiyang Gompa
This unique Buddhist monastery is located in the Indian district of Lahul and Spiti, perched on a picturesque hill that rises 4,166 meters above sea level. At the beginning of this century, Kyungpo Monastery celebrated its thousandth anniversary.
According to one version, the monastery was built after a monastery in the neighboring village of Rangrik was destroyed. Kyongpo Monastery is home to three hundred monks who cultivate the surrounding lands during the summer. The founder of the monastery is considered to be Drumton, a disciple of the renowned teacher Atisha. Currently, Kyongpo Monastery is the largest monastery in the Spiti Valley. The walls of the monastery are adorned with paintings. The monastery’s collection includes a vast number of books, sculptures, weapons, tanks, and other works of art as well as historical artifacts.
