Sale: Operation Manual

More than half of the summer has already passed. This means that large shopping centers in Ukrainian cities have begun to offer a variety of discounts, promotions, and special offers. You must have also noticed that the number of displays featuring slogans like “-30%”, “-50%”, “Sale” and similar phrases has significantly increased. Of course – it’s time for stores to get rid of their summer merchandise and start preparing for their autumn collections.

Dictionaries define “sale” as the act of selling goods with the aim of clearing out all inventory. In other words, the items are discounted—but not damaged! Any respectable company, whether it’s a fashion boutique, a porcelainware store, a furniture factory, or a shoe retailer, avoids keeping old collections around. Before each new collection is launched, they offer discounted prices on items from previous seasons.

How does this work? In the initial phase, the price of an item you’re interested in will only drop by 10–15%, so it won’t differ much from its original cost. If that suits you, go ahead and pay for it. Since there are few customers at first, you can try on everything and evaluate the quality. But if the item is still out of your budget, wait a week or so. Of course, there’s a risk that you might not find anything suitable by then, but as the saying goes, risk is part of the game. In just a week, the same dress or perfume will be 30–50% cheaper. That’s when your desire to buy something coincides with your ability to afford it! By the end of the sale, discounts can sometimes reach up to 70%. By this time, there are usually only a few remaining items—perhaps in non-standard sizes or colors.

But nowadays, besides helping to clear out outdated inventory, sales have become an effective marketing tool that benefits both buyers and sellers. For buyers, the advantage is obvious: they can get high-quality goods at discounted prices. Sellers, on the other hand, can get rid of excess stock and attract new, loyal customers. That’s why many stores offer coupons during sales, allowing customers to get discounts on future collections. They also provide catalogs and discount cards.

While indulging in the excitement of shopping, don’t forget about your rights as a consumer. Sometimes stores announce discounts on certain items, but then include a clause stating that such items cannot be returned or exchanged. This is a major violation of consumer rights—and people often accept it without questioning it. But that’s absolutely wrong.

If you find an item that doesn’t suit you, you need to follow certain procedures to get your money back. The item must not have been used; its original condition, packaging, and labels must be intact. You also need a purchase receipt, such as a cash register or sales slip. Take all these documents to the store and submit a written request for a refund in duplicate. If the store refuses to comply, you can contact the local office of the Consumer Protection Agency. Every store is required to display the contact information for such organizations.
