The devil's bridge in Switzerland
Teufelsbrucke, this is the name of the unique bridge located in the Schölennen gorge, the canton of Uri, Switzerland. And the name of the bridge is not accidental. He even has a corresponding legend with the participation of a mythical being.
Let's start with the legend. The gorge itself was one of the most impassable in the area. Once, a shepherd, tired of the next crossing, exclaimed in his heart that let the devil, at least, build a bridge here. The unclean responded instantly and agreed. The payment for the construction was to be the soul of the first, who will pass through the bridge. Residents sent the first goat, and the devil did not like it terribly. But at a time when he was ready to destroy his creation, he was scared away by an elderly woman with a cross. The first bridge in the gorge appeared in the 13th century, and it was wooden. Three centuries later, the first stone bridge appeared here. Over time, a tunnel appeared here, and the bridge itself became an important link in the transport system of the Swiss Alps.
