The submerged village of Bakota is the Ukrainian Pompey. Hiding in the Khmelnytsky region, this village can not be found on the map. But Bakoto was once an ecologically clean paradise, surrounded by the Podolsky Tovtry National Park. Everything changed Dnister.
There is a submerged village of Bakot 55 km from Kamyanets-Podilsky. It is easy to get to the district center by car or by train from Khmelnitsky direction. And from Kamenets to Bakoty - by passing transport or by bus, following to Old Ushitsa.
Today on the site of a huge village there is an artificial sea. On the shore there are only a few buildings - a children's camp and the oldest church in Podillia.
Despite the flooding of the village, the Bakotsky Pecherny St. Michael's Monastery retained its original appearance. Founded in 1362 by local priests, the church has no elaborate ornaments and a richly decorated altar. All its decorations are ancient icons and village handkerchiefs, which protect the shrines from the scattering of rocks.
The temple for a long time was covered with earth, sand and stones. Only in 1889 Bishop Dmitry arrived in Bakot, who, after examining the area, confirmed the conjectures that it was in this place many centuries ago that the monastery was. In just a few years, more than 30 niches were excavated, up to 10 meters long. All of them once served as a haven for the clergy. Of particular interest were 19 rooms, in which human bones were neatly and anatomically correctly laid out. The Great Rockfall of 1996 destroyed most of the shrines of this place, leaving only fruit gardens, burials of saints and remnants of cells. Today, every visitor can feel like a monk, and spend several hours in ancient cells.
St. Michael's Church on the White Mountain in Bokot is famous throughout Ukraine and beyond its unique holy atmosphere. Local argue that a night spent near the altar of the church is capable of curing diseases.
Coming to Bakutu for a long time to search for interesting and beautiful places is not necessary - they are all in the palm of your hand.
Founded in the 12th century, the Bakot settlement for a long time was the capital of the Dniester Lower reaches. In different years, its inhabitants defended Kievan Rus from the raids of Mongol-Tatars, Poles and Lithuanians. In the 15th century Bakota territorially moved to the possessions of feudal Lithuania. This concludes the Ukrainian history of the village, but not its development.
Ukrainians living on this territory constantly organized riots, which affected the economic level of the region. Gradually, the inhabitants left this area in search of stability and peace. Only in the middle of the 19th century the former military and administrative center of Podillia was reborn as a small village in the Khmelnytsky region.
In the first half of the 20th century, Bakota's life was no different from the life of most of the towns of Western Ukraine - the transition to the leadership of the Soviet Union, the Second World War, the building of communism. Until the construction of the Dniester hydroelectric station began in the 60s of the 20th century. The threat of flooding was constantly accompanied by the town. Local people saved everything valuable - they cut down trees, in the hope of taking the flood from the village, moved the churches and cemeteries to remote areas.
The 70s brought trouble to Bakotu - the village officially fell under the flooded territory. Residents were given the opportunity to move to neighboring villages, but with one condition. All the owners of the houses had to destroy their houses on their own and cut down orchards.
Today nothing remembers the tragedy and tears that were shed on this earth. After 1981, when Bakot was flooded with water, this place became one of the most beautiful corners of Ukraine. There are no deliberate entertainment, which can be found in well-known resorts. Do not find here and noisy big tourist companies. This resort will not give you health improvement with mineral waters. Bakuta is a rest of a different rank - it is a spiritual restoration with a tent near the ancient temple, enjoyment of the virgin nature and a rapture with pure air of the Carpathians.
For lovers of relaxation in comfort, a trailer town was founded a few years ago on the Bakot reservoir. The good infrastructure of the area, the arrangement of trailers, the availability of drinking water - all this makes the shores of the Bakotsky pond the best place for resting savages, good fishing and spiritual recovery.
