Ilyinsky Church (Sumy)

Walking around the city of Sumy, it is impossible to pass by the Ilinsk temple. The simple classical forms and the usual blue-and-white color stop the lookAny passerby.

The magnetism of this building is inexplicable. In the blue domes, the sky is displayed, and the white vaults of the church emphasize its airiness.

Despite the architectural ease of the church of Elijah, throughout its history it has undergone great trials. For the first time the Ilyinsky temple was built in the 17th century. But already in the 18th century there was nothing left of it - everything was destroyed by fire.

The church was quickly restored, and in 1793, a year after the tragedy, the Ilyinsky temple pleased the Sumchans with the gold of their domes. But the new wooden church suffered the fate of its predecessor - everything burned to the ground.

The third time the Elias church was built in 1851. This building has survived to the present day.

Today the church of Elijah rises in the center of the oldest district of Sumy called Zasumka. The doors of the temple are open at any time. Among the ancient images of the church, the icons of St. Mitrofan of Voronezh and Tikhon of Zadonsk with icons of their relics are most revered. According to the parishioners, these relics have miraculous properties.
