While on the eastern coast of the Crimean peninsula, glance into the city of Kerch. Due to its advantageous location and seaport located, this city was considered one of the main eastern trade points of the country even in Byzantine times. Here merchants came from all corners of the great power and sold their outlandish merchandise, and after that he was transferred to Constantinople. In the heyday of the Byzantine state, a church was built here in honor of John the Baptist.John the Baptist, or, as it is also called, John the Baptist was one of the last prophets who predicted the coming of the Messiah, and later baptized Jesus in the rivers of the Jordan. There is a legend that during the reign of the Byzantine Empire, the port city was called only St. John. The same name wore a strait next to it. All merchants and seafarers called Kerch this way. Therefore, it is not surprising that the Church of John the Baptist was erected here. The temple in honor of the prophet is one of the bright monuments of Byzantine architecture on the Ukrainian lands. According to individual architectural details of the building, it can be argued that it was created by masters from Constantinople. The Church of John the Baptist has a double age. It was built in the 8th - 9th centuries, but the kind that now has been created thanks to the annexes in the middle of the 19th century. The famous Italian architect Alexander Digby designed these extensions. Some scholars claim that the construction of the temple began much earlier. Another disciple of Jesus Christ - Andrew the First-Called gave his blessing on the erection of this shrine. Now the church of St. John is conditionally divided into two parts, belonging to different epochs. When you are near the church, pay attention to the bell tower, the western facade of the building and the northern limit. It was these details that were added to the old church, which greatly increased it in size. The eastern side of the shrine remains untouched. It has an unusual for the Slavic architecture wall lining. It is alternating four rows of white stone and four rows of red brick. This method of masonry effectively distinguishes the church building against the background of the usual eastern European urban construction of Kerch. In addition, this multilayer increases the strength of the building and its resistance to seismic activity. In the Church of St. John the Baptist narrow lancet windows, columns with Corinthian orders and antique tombstones, placed in the walls of the temple. These architectural elements refer to the basilic type of structure. At the same time, the church has a cross-domed structure.Go inside the shrine. The interior of the Church of St. John the Baptist is no less bright than its exterior. Marble columns with Byzantine capitals, the same alternating masonry, only smaller, an exhibition of relics, a gilded iconostasis - all this you can see in the church. Just imagine how many saints are buried in the shrine of the temple, since the 8th century ...If you decided to visit the Church of St. John the Baptist in Kerch, then the best time of the year, of course, will be summer. For example, June 24 celebrates the Nativity of John the Baptist, which is included in the number of great holidays, and on August 29 a fast is established - on the day of the Beheading of the Prophet. The Church of St. John is located next to the coastal zone on Lenin Square.
