The unique plateau of Sigiriya

Sigiriya or the Lion Mountain, which is located on the island of Sri & Lanka, is a massive plateau, rising to 370 meters. According to legend, the castle in the plateau was built by King Kashyapa at the end of the 5th century BC. e. The plateau is located in the heart of the island.

In the fifth century AD Kashyapa, the eldest son of King Dhatusena, was the apparent heir to the throne. but the father decided in favor of the younger son of Mogallana. Kashyapa executed his father in time. Mogallana clearly feared his older brother and disappeared in South India. In order to protect himself from numerous enemies, Kasyapa decided to rebuild the capital in an equidistant and inaccessible place. The plateau of Sigiriya, located at an altitude of 370 meters above sea level, was excellent for this. By the end of the fifth century, around the cliff a magnificent city appeared, with a flowering garden and, perhaps, the first multi-level fountains in history. Also, there were several swimming pools. The ruins of Sigiriya were discovered in 1907 by the English explorer John Steele. Until now, it is carrying out restoration work. For more than 30 years, Sigiriya has been protected by UNESCO, since in 1982 it entered the World Heritage List.
