Ascension Cathedral, Lebedin
The small town of Lebedin in the Sumy region became famous for staying here many famous personalities: T. Shevchenko, G. Skovoroda, P. Gulak-Artemovsky, G. Kvitki-Osnovyanenko. One of the main attractions of the city is the Ascension Cathedral.
In 1692, on the site of this church, there was a wooden church bearing the name of Ascension. Due to the dilapidated structure, it was demolished. Despite the fact that other religious buildings existed in the city, in 1858 a new Ascension Cathedral was built. It was made of stone. The architecture of the building skillfully combines the features of classicism and baroque. The four-pillar temple has the shape of a cube with a semicircular ledge. The bell tower is located above the entrance. The white-stone building with blue elements, together with the adjoining church, is perfectly combined with the terrain. In this form the temple has survived to the present day.
