The Marble Temple at Lake General Carrero. Chile
On the border between Chile and Argentina, in the Patagonian Andes (the Chilean region of Aysén), near the shores of Lake General Carrera, there are marble caves known as Las Cavernas de Marmol. Locally, these caves are called “Marble Cathedral” and they are located approximately in the middle of the lake, on the Chilean side.
In Argentina, Lake General Carrera is known as Buenos Aires. It is one of the deepest lakes in the world, with a maximum depth of 590 meters. Of glacial origin, it is located at an altitude of 217 meters above sea level, surrounded by the Andes mountain range. The surface area of this high-altitude lake is 1,850 square kilometers. It was discovered by Carlos María Moyano during his expedition in 1880–1881. Several large settlements are located along its shores, such as Puerto Ingeniero Ibáñez and Chile Chico. General Carrera is famous for its extremely clear water and abundance of trout and salmon. Many tourists come here to fish, but the main attraction of the lake is the labyrinth of beautiful marble caves found on a limestone peninsula.
