Church of the Cathedral of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Matkov
A wooden temple in the center of Matkov is very difficult to miss. Located on a low hill, the church of the Cathedral of the Blessed Virgin Mary is the main attraction of a small village.
It is interesting that the church of the Cathedral of the Blessed Virgin Mary — one of the few architectural structures made in the traditions of the Boyko school. In Ukraine, there are not enough Boykov temples: 2 — in Ivano-Frankivsk and 5 — in the Lviv regions. One of them — Church of St. George in Lviv.
The Temple of the Blessed Virgin was built in 1838. Three tall wooden houses with domes in the 19th century admired the architects and ordinary people of that time. It is not for nothing that the church is considered the most beautiful religious building of the late 19th century.
Most of the wooden churches in Ukraine have preserved their original interior decoration. The Church of the Mother of God Cathedral was no exception. Two reconstructions of the monastery in the 19th century added authentic Ukrainian paintings to the decoration of the building. In 1924, near the temple appeared a two-tiered bell tower in the same style as the main church.
Today the church of the Most Holy Mother of God is visited for the sake of a calm atmosphere and unique values — wall paintings, the iconostasis and the altar of the century before last. Due to its original architecture, the church was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site as one of the best wooden churches in the Carpathian region of Ukraine.
