The Holy Ascension Cathedral, Belgorod-Dnistrovsky

The Holy Ascension Cathedral in Belgorod-Dnestrovsky is the main temple of the ancient city. He is an active shrine, within which relics of St. John of Suceava are buried. This saint was brutally murdered in 1330, at this place (near the miraculous spring) the church of John of Suceava was built.

The Holy Ascension Cathedral has a deep history, which began in the 1810s. The local residents collected funds for the construction of the temple (on the site of an abandoned Turkish cemetery). The structure had an oblong shape of the ship, which was later rebuilt into a quadrilateral cross in the traditional (for the 19th century) style of Russian classicism.

The rich decorationinside the temple has changed somewhat since the original idea, the years of the Soviet era were disastrous. In honor of the 2,000th anniversary of the Nativity of Christ, large-scale reconstructions were carried out here, and a new chapel was added. Today, the restoration work of the 40-meter bell tower continues.
