Katharine Hepburn Was Born on May 12, 1907, but Later Reduced Her Age by More Than 2 Years, Claiming She Was Born on November 8, 1909, the Date of Her Younger Brother’s Birth2 photos
She grew up as a active, athletic girl who enjoyed physical exercises, often wore trousers and short hair, and even referred to herself by the male name Jimmy. She received her early education at home. After entering college, Katherine decided to become an actress.
In the early 1930s, she made her debut on Broadway. Shortly after her first performances, Hollywood producers began offering her opportunities. In 1932, she debuted in cinema alongside John Barrymore in *The Divorce Case* and was immediately recognized as one of the most promising young stars. Her third film, *Early Fame*, lived up to its title and won her an Oscar.
Soon, Katherine Hepburn became an actress who independently chose her directors. Independence was one of her most prominent traits.
As early as 1928, right after graduating from college, Katherine Hepburn married Ladlow Ogden Smith, a native of Philadelphia. However, their marriage ended a few years later, and she never remarried, stating that she had “lost faith in the institution of marriage.”
In 1942, during the filming of *Woman of the Year*, Katherine Hepburn met Spencer Tracy, a sex symbol of American cinema. Their relationship lasted for a quarter of a century but remained private. Tracy was unable to leave his wife and deaf son, and Hepburn only publicly acknowledged their affair after his death.
Together, they appeared in over a dozen films. Her role in Stanley Kramer’s *Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner* (1967) won her another Oscar.
The list of actors she worked with would be an honor for any actress: Humphrey Bogart (*Queen of Africa*, 1951), Peter O’Toole (*The Lion of Winter*, 1968), John Wayne (*Rustler Sam* , 1975), Henry Fonda (*On Golden Pond*, 1981), Warren Beatty (*Love Story*, 1994 – Hepburn’s final film).
She had over fifty acting roles, and almost none of them were minor. She won four Oscars (more than any other actor or actress in history) and was nominated twelve times. She was rightfully called “a national treasure of the United States” and “the first lady of cinema.” Along with Bette Davis, she was recognized by the American Film Institute as the greatest actress in Hollywood’s history.
Not only known for her beauty but also for her independence, Hepburn was always very outspoken. Cultural historians attribute a significant role to her in the ultimate emancipation of women in the 20th century.
Throughout her life, she enjoyed excellent health, but by the mid-1990s, after ending her acting career, her condition began to deteriorate. In May 2003, doctors diagnosed her with an aggressively growing tumor in her neck; however, due to her advanced age, no medical intervention was deemed necessary.
Katherine Hepburn passed away on June 29, 2003, at the age of 96, in her home in the coastal town of Old Saybrook, Connecticut. She was buried in the family plot at Cedar Hill Cemetery in Hartford.

And most importantly, it has sandy beaches, a lagoon, and a tropical sea where you can swim.</
