This two-story wooden building, clad with stone, was constructed in 1815 according to the design of architect E.A. Vasilyev, in collaboration with I.L. Vatelet. It was originally built for the Slobodsko-Ukrainian Gymnasium, which operated there until 1845. After that, the gymnasium moved into the building currently located at Moskovsky Prospect, 24, and its former premises were for a long time referred to as “the old gymnasium.”
“It was in this building that, starting in 1861, the optical workshop of A.N. Edelberg, renowned in Kharkov, was located. This workshop produced various optical, astronomical, geodetic devices, and many other instruments. Under the leadership of Alexander Nikolaevich Edelberg, the first clocks were installed and put into operation on the bell tower of the Uspensky Cathedral” (E.A. Ploticher).
In the early 20th century, A. Dirberg’s popular confectionery shop was located in this building, and it often served as a gathering place for chess enthusiasts.
During the war, the building was destroyed, and a five-story residential building was constructed in its place (Moskovsky Prospect, 5). For a long time, the “Chronika” cinema operated in this building.
