Cocos Island is the largest of all uninhabited islands.4 photos
Cocos Island is located off the coast of Costa Rica, on the Pacific side. It is one of the national parks of the country. Surrounded by deep waters, the island is home to a diverse range of tropical marine creatures, which excite divers from all over the world.
In 1978, Cocos Island was designated as a National Park of Costa Rica. The park encompasses not only the island itself but also the surrounding waters. It has been included by UNESCO in the list of “Wetlands of International Importance.” Due to the incredible biodiversity in its waters, the island is regarded by the Professional Diving Instructors Association as one of the top 10 best places for scuba diving. Oceanographer Jacques Cousteau, who visited it several times, described Cocos Island as the most beautiful place on Earth. However, only park staff are allowed to live there, as they are responsible for protecting it from poachers. Beauty must be protected, and tourists and sailors can only access the island with special permission. Visitors are not permitted to camp on the island, stay overnight, collect flowers or stones, let alone touch animals.
As for plants and animals, Cocos Island is a volcanic island, the only one in the area, and it is located 550 kilometers away from the nearest coast. It has never been part of any continent, so the animal and plant life here was brought by chance. Some species survived and thrived, while others did not. Those that remained combined in unique ways, resulting in a truly unique ecosystem with many endemic species. Even the forests on Cocos Island are distinct from all others. It is the only island in the eastern Pacific Ocean with tropical rainforests covered in mist.
There are only five species of mammals on the island, and they were all introduced by humans. Their populations are carefully monitored to ensure they do not cause harm to the local ecosystem.
