Ray Kroc: The American Businessman Who Turned a Small Restaurant into a Global Fast-Food Chain3 photos
Ray Kroc, whose fortune was estimated at $500 million, was included in Time magazine’s list of the 100 most important people of the 20th century. In addition to owning the successful fast-food chain McDonald’s, he also served as the owner of the professional baseball team San Diego Padres from 1974 to 1984. Born on October 5, 1902, in Oak Park, Illinois, Kroc came from a family of Czech immigrants. During World War I, he trained to become an ambulance driver, but the war ended before he could join the combat. In his early 20s, he tried various jobs, including selling paper cups and working at a local radio station. Later, he worked in one of Ray Dambaugh’s restaurants to gain experience in the food business.
Kroc was convinced that he could sell many mixers to new restaurants opening across the country. So he partnered with the McDonald brothers, who owned a small restaurant in San Bernardino, California. He purchased the franchise rights to open additional McDonald’s stores, intending to implement the same high standards there as well. However, differences arose over the terms of the agreement, and Kroc eventually bought out their shares entirely.
Ultimately, Kroc built a new McDonald’s restaurant right next to the original one, forcing the McDonald brothers to leave the business. He then created a new type of fast-food enterprise by implementing strict standards for food preparation and customer service. His innovative marketing strategies, especially the use of the Ronald McDonald mascot, made his company one of the most recognizable in the world.
In addition to running his business, Kroc was also involved in philanthropic activities. He founded the Ronald McDonald House Foundation, which provides support for families with sick children.
Ray Kroc died on January 14, 1984, at the age of 81 due to heart failure.
