Constantin Stanislavsky was born 171 years ago on January 17, 1863, into the wealthy family of industrialist Alexeev, who was related to the Mamontovs and Tretyakoffs. Stanislavsky’s talent came from his French grandmother, a renowned actress in Paris. Initially, Konstantin aspired to become an opera singer but later collaborated with Nemirovich-Danchenko to establish the Moscow Art Theater. The theater achieved fame after its founders met A. P. Chekhov. Their productions, such as „The Seagull,“ „Uncle Vanya,“ and „Three Sisters,“ became classics. In the early 20th century, Stanislavsky developed his unique method of acting, creating a scientific approach to an artist’s creativity and establishing rules for actors’ behavior on stage.

According to Stanislavsky, the most important goal was to create the illusion of real life on stage. He believed that every role, no matter how small, was equally valuable. Konstantin Alekseev wrote books such as „The Actor’s Work on Himself“ and „My Life in Art,“ which are still highly respected among actors today. He passed away on August 7, 1938, from heart failure.

Maria Petrovna Lilina (Perevoshikova), an actress at the Moscow Art Theater and a People’s Artist of the RSFSR, was Stanislavsky’s wife. Their daughter, Kira Alekseeva-Falk, served as the director of the memorial museum established in Stanislavsky’s former home.
