Students at Wellesley College for Women, located near Boston in the state of Massachusetts, were outraged by the appearance of a hyperrealistic sculpture on their campus, depicting a man wearing only underwear. The work “Sleepwalker” by sculptor Tony Mattelli, installed in the schoolyard on February 3, 2014, was part of his personal exhibition at the university’s Davis Museum. Of course, the artist had aimed to create a highly realistic depiction, but the result proved to be somewhat excessive. Indeed, upon seeing it, one would immediately understand that this is not a work intended for public display. A bald man in underpants, with an open mouth and arms extended forward… Such a sight could easily frighten anyone, especially students who are always in a hurry to get to their classes. Even if some students might find the idea amusing, there must be a limit to what is considered acceptable humor. Three hundred students signed a petition demanding that the sculpture be removed from the campus, but the administration decided not to admit any mistake on their part.
