Marlon Brando

Marlon Brando was born on April 3, 1924, in Omaha, Nebraska, USA. His life resembled more a screenplay than real life. His family could hardly be considered exemplary, and he never completed school. Unable to endure the dull existence amidst a tyrannical father and an alcoholic mother, he fled to New York, where he made a living through occasional jobs and performing in second-rate amateur theater productions.

It was there that Williams Tennessee, who was searching for an actor for the role of Stanley Kowalski in the play “A Streetcar Named Desire,” encountered him. Brando easily obtained the role and thus entered Hollywood—largely due to his appearance.

The press immediately gave him the nickname “The Wild One” because Marlon completely ignored all norms of behavior. He freely used profanity when discussing films, producers, directors, and journalists, and at times his behavior was downright rude. For example, when he was supposed to receive an Oscar for his role as Don Corleone in “The Godfather,” he simply refused to show up. Instead, a Native American woman took the stage and announced that Brando had declined the award in protest against the oppression of Indians. Hollywood disgusted him with its hypocrisy; he was always searching for something “real.” This pursuit was reflected in his numerous lovers, wives, and children.

He is best known for his roles in films such as “A Streetcar Named Desire,” “On the Beach,” “The Godfather,” “Last Tango in Paris,” “Superman,” “Apocalypse Now,” and “Don Juan de Marco.”

Due to his scandalous nature and constant caprices that cost producers a lot of money, he was increasingly rarely cast in films. However, this did not bother Brando at all. He had earned enough money to buy a small island and live there with his growing family.

He spent much of his time on Tahiti, where he married a local woman. Brando had eight children in total, including three adopted ones. In his later years, he suffered from obesity and senile dementia.

Marlon Brando won two Oscars (he was nominated for a total of eight times), two Golden Globes, three BAFTA awards, and an Emmy. He ranked fourth on the list of “100 Greatest Movie Stars of the 20th Century” compiled by the American Film Institute. Additionally, he was included in Time magazine’s list of the 100 most influential people of the 20th century. His contributions to cinema were recognized with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Marlon Brando passed away on July 1, 2004, due to pulmonary fibrosis. He was cremated, and part of his ashes was scattered in Tahiti and another portion in the Valley of the Dead.
