Moskovsky Prospekt, formerly Moskovskaya Street, No. 7

This two-story wooden building, clad with stone, was constructed in 1815 according to the design by architect E. A. Vasilyev, with the participation of architect I. L. Vatellet. It was built for the Slobodsko-Ukrainian Gymnasium, which operated there until 1845. After that, the gymnasium moved to the current location at Moskovsky Prospekt, 24, and its former premises were for a long time referred to as “the old gymnasium building.”

From 1861 onwards, this building housed the mechanical workshop (factory) of A. N. Edelberg, a renowned expert in optics in Kharkiv. This workshop produced various optical, astronomical, geodetic instruments and equipment. Under the leadership of Alexander Nikolaevich Edelberg, the first clocks were installed and operated at the bell tower of the Uspensky Cathedral.

At the beginning of the 20th century, this building also housed the popular A. Dirberg confectionery shop, which often attracted chess enthusiasts.

During the war, the building was destroyed, and in its place was constructed a five-story residential building (Moskovsky Prospekt, 5). For some time, the “Chronika” cinema operated there.
